Accessibility statement
This statement applies to the LIL-ECHOES website, https://lil-echoes.eu. The website is run by the Research Software Engineering team at Newcastle University on behalf of the LIL-ECHOES consortium, coordinated by Newcastle University.
We want as many people as possible to be able to use it. That means you should be able to:
- change colours, contrast levels and fonts using your browser or device settings
- zoom in up to 400% without the text spilling off the screen
- use the whole website with a keyboard alone, with a visible focus indicator
- use the website with speech recognition software
- listen to the website using a screen reader
- turn off animation using your device's "reduce motion" setting
We have also tried to keep the text simple to understand.
How accessible this website is
This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2 AA standard, because of the parts listed below.
Content that is not yet accessible
Search
The search box and its results are provided by Pagefind, a third-party component. We have added a visible label, raised the contrast of its placeholder text, taken a hidden button out of the keyboard order, and made the number of results announce itself to screen readers. We have not yet tested its list of results with every screen reader, and there may be problems we have not found. Every page is also reachable from the menu.
Documents
Project deliverables and publications will be published as PDF files. Some may not be fully accessible to screen readers, for example if they lack headings or descriptions of their figures. None are published yet. We will check each document before it is published, and where one cannot be made accessible we will say so beside it and offer it in another format on request.
Video and audio
There is no video or audio on the website yet. When there is, it will have captions and a transcript.
Feedback and contact information
If you find a problem not listed here, or you need any part of this website in a different format, email rseteam@newcastle.ac.uk. Tell us the page address and what went wrong. That address reaches the Research Software Engineering team at Newcastle University.
Enforcement procedure
The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) is responsible for enforcing the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018. If you are not happy with how we respond to your complaint, contact the Equality Advisory and Support Service (EASS).
Technical information about this website's accessibility
Newcastle University is committed to making its websites accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.
What we do to make it accessible
- Every page has one main heading, headings in order, a link to skip to the content, and landmarks a screen reader can move between.
- Text contrast is at least 4.5:1 against its background, and controls and focus indicators at least 3:1.
- Every photograph has a description, and the website refuses to publish one without it. Decorative images are hidden from screen readers.
- Pages reflow to a single column at a width of 320 pixels with no sideways scrolling.
- Menus and pop-up biographies close when keyboard focus leaves them, and nothing focused is hidden under the header.
How we tested this website
Every change to the website is checked automatically with pa11y against the WCAG 2 AA rules before it is published. On 29 October 2026 we also reviewed every type of page, and the code behind them, against WCAG 2.2 AA, at screen widths from 320 pixels to a desktop monitor. The problems that review found have been fixed, apart from those listed above.
